Our football section currently consists of three adult teams competing at div 2, div 7 and div 11 respectively.St. Finian’s originally in the Fingal leagues from its formation until its amalgamation into the Dublin leagues at the end of 1994.
The successes of the juvenile structure within St.Finian’s began to show towards the end of 1994. The present first team began its climb to senior status winning the last trophy handed out in fingal football the Mc Ardel Cup. The Team transferred to the junior 4 grade (Div 8) in the Dublin Leagues and the success continued and by the end of that season the Junior B championship, Div 4 league and the Sheridan cup had been secured.
The team continued to make progress over the next few years winning various other leagues and cups but the Junior championship proved more difficult due to a combination of bad luck and inexperience.
The spring of 1999 saw the appointment of a new manager. The team was operating in Junior 1 and had lost out on promotion by the narrowest of margins the previous year. The new manager had come with a big name reputation and along with his fellow selectors, he did not fail to deliver. The Junior 1 league was secured that year but another championship defeat at the final hurdle put a dampener on the season. This however was to be rectified the following season. The 2000 season saw St.Finian’s 3rd junior final appearance and this time the title was secured. The team went on to narrowly loose out to Sallins (Kildare) in the replay of the Leinster Final but the Inter 2 league title was secured to round off a great year.
The Team had benefited greatly from the Dublin junior championship win and the experience gained from the Leinster campaign. There was a new confidence about the way the team were playing which often brought about some complacency. This had given caused some concern for the selectors during the opening rounds of the Intermediate 1 league. The Intermediate championship campaign started similarly however it wasn’t long before St. Finian’s had settled into their winning ways. After several outstanding displays a place in the intermediate final was secured against O'Dwyers. Saturday the 21st of July 2001 is a day that will be remembered as the realisation of a dream for many of the St. Finians members, the day senior status was achieved. St Finians defeated O Dwyer’s by 10 points on that occasion to win the intermediate championship.
St. Finian’s three adult football teams are continuously improving with our division 7 & 11 teams both winning their respective leagues last season and through continued hard work are hopeful that this coming season will also reap its rewards.
The adult teams are always looking for players to strengthen their squads or mentors to lend a hand with the teams and anyone interested in getting involved with the football section can contact any club member or visit our contacts page.
